WORDS OF WISDOM

Approach each workday as if your productivity is the basis for being invited back again and again.

Every man's work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself.

HOW WELL DO YOU SERVE YOUR COMPANY?

My customer service newsletters are typically about external customers, but this month we're going to mix it up a little. This week I received a strong reminder about service to organizations and thought I would share it.

My husband and I are remodeling our "beach house," our permanent retirement home when the time comes. My brother is an expert tile guy and he is taking up 1700 sq. feet of tile and the thin set below it, and then he will lay the new tile. The reason for all this detail is that taking up the tile, and especially the thin set (the stuff under the tile that makes it stick to the concrete) is an extremely difficult and hard labor job. He hired a guy from one of the local labor pools to help with this task. Like my brother, this worker has given 200%. At lunch on the second day we mentioned what a strong work ethic he had and he responded "I've got to work hard because you have the option of not inviting me back tomorrow. Besides, I've been a business owner and I always expected a solid 8 hours work for a day's pay."

So what was the strong reminder for me? Your employer is your customer, even if you have been their employee for many years. What if your employer could decide whether or not to invite you back on a daily basis? Would that change how you perform your job on any given day? Do you treat your employer as a valued customer?

TIPS FOR STELLAR SERVICE TO YOUR COMPANY

You can increase the level of service you provide to your "customer" (employer) by approaching each workday as an independent hire. Would you be invited back to work each day...

  • ...if you didn't arrive at work on time and ready to be productive right away? You can achieve this by ending each day with 5 or 10 minutes of planning time. Consider what you want to accomplish the following day, make a list and leave it on your desk. This will jump start your productivity when you arrive at work the following day.
  • ...if you did too much socializing, responding to personal emails or making unnecessary personal calls, etc.? Remember that if you are guilty of these behaviors, even some of the time, you are "cheating" your "customer" (company) out of the productivity they deserve.
  • ...if you did not give 100% effort when interacting with external customers? That means being pleasant and helpful no matter what kind of day you are having. It also means keeping your promises regarding follow-up and follow-through.

Embrace the daily, "independent hire" concept and you will most certainly look at your productivity through new lenses!
