HEAR FROM ALL OF YOUR TEAM MEMBERS
|
|
When you ask your team members for feedback or input on an issue you probably get a variety of responses. They might include:
- Individuals who are quick to offer their thoughts and ideas for moving forward in a positive manner. They may be enthusiastic about change and anxious to move forward as quickly as possible.
- Individuals who question what has been done and/or the direction to be taken. They may want the process to move a bit slower allowing for time to ensure all the details are covered.
- Individuals who appear to find the obstacles and negative aspects, rather than the positive ones. They may thrive on being the devil's advocate.
- Individuals who appear to have little or nothing at all to contribute.
As leaders, it is important for us to hear from all of these individuals as each has something of value to bring to the discussion. Together they bring hope, enthusiasm, thought, and analysis.

TIPS FOR GATHERING INPUT FROM ALL
|
|
- When hearing from the positive, enthusiastic contributors consider writing their ideas on a flipchart so they know they have been heard.
- To accommodate those who typically want time to really process the information, consider providing a brief overview prior to the meeting. This will allow them the "think" time they prefer.
- For those who question a direction and/or find more negatives than positives, ask them for possible solutions. These individuals usually like not only to challenge, but to be challenged. Work to gain agreement on what success will look like. Example: Ask what's most important - meeting a deadline with an acceptable solution or spending time on the perfect solution?
- For those individuals who appear to have little or nothing to say, seek their input. Come out and ask if they agree or disagree with anything that has been presented or if they have additional ideas. You may be surprised by the additional information you receive from these individuals.
Many leaders mistakenly gravitate to those who show enthusiasm for the direction the leaders believe is best. However, hearing from all and considering a variety of options will serve them better.
