ARE YOU A D i S OR C?

In my October 2006 newsletter I introduced the four core behavioral styles as represented by the acronym DiSC. Here's an overview:

The D is for dominance and these individuals tend to direct, prefer a fast pace and are task-oriented.

The i (lowercase because i's like to be different) is for influence and these individuals tend to be outgoing, enthusiastic, and people-oriented.

The S is for steadiness and these individuals tend to be team players, very loyal and people-oriented.

The C is for conscientiousness and these individuals tend to be analytical, tactful and task-oriented.

Consider which one or two styles represent your core behavior. Are you a combination of people /task- oriented or are you strictly people-oriented or task- oriented? Consider this insight as you lead your employees. If you are naturally task-oriented, you may need to consciously crank up the people skills to lead effectively.

YOU CAN PEOPLE READ

There is a tool that can help you "read" people and determine if they are in the D, i, S, or C mode when communicating with you. Here's what you do:

First ask yourself: Is this person Active (fast paced, assertive, dynamic, bold) or Thoughtful (moderate paced, calm, methodical, careful)?

Next ask: Is this person Questioning (logic focused, objective, skeptical, challenging) or Accepting (people focused, empathizing, receptive, agreeable)?

With these two questions answered, you can identify which of the DiSC modes the person is operating from.

The D or dominant mode is represented by the person who is both Active and Questioning.

The i or influencing mode is represented by the person who is both Active and Accepting.

The S or steady mode is represented by the person who is both Accepting and Thoughtful.

The C or conscientious mode is represented by the person who is both Questioning and Thoughtful.

Armed with the information, you can better adjust your style to meet the needs of the individual you have "read."
